TEACHER OF MOVEMENT FOR ACTORS
Katya taught on the core course at the ROYAL ACADEMY OF DRAMATIC ART, LONDON, 1989-2009
Katya’s classes opened up all kinds of new possibilities for me as an actor. They gave me a whole new awareness of how I could express myself physically through a role and as a body moving through space. It was invaluable.

I learnt many wonderful things at RADA. But without doubt my favorite class was Laban.

I found Katya’s Laban classes absolutely inspirational. I consider her to be one of the most influential, inspirational and professional teachers I ever had the fortune to encounter. I found her body work extraordinarily valuable in helping me to explore and embody stage characters; to encourage being present, authentic and spontaneous in space and in action and commuincation with other actors; in helping to mine and marry the deep psychological exploration of Stanislavski acting work with Laban techniques, releasing and intensifying inner impulses and emotions through the physical.
I can genuinely say that working with Katya was a significant factor in my progress as an actor, and the development of my process. I would like to highly recommend Katya Bloom as an exceptional, dedicated and gifted teacher.

Katya has worked on 10 shows directed by Katie Laris, for the Santa Barbara City College Theatre Group, 2015-2020
Inspired by our brilliant movement advisor, Katya Bloom, the actors have sought to find the most authentic way to relate to each other and the space they inhabit.

PLAYWRIGHT
- Colors of Roses 1993 – produced at Madison Avenue Theatre, NYC.
"It deals with the intense retrospection that comes with old age. The author fills her canvas with poignant, touching tones. A tragic turn of events leads to a heart-wrenching conclusion, but by then the characters have been so fully drawn the outcome seems as real as life itself."
It was also produced as part of the Women’s Theatre Workshop; at Oval House, London, 1994.
- The Ridge, 2001 – Selected for rehearsed reading festival, HOTink at NYU in NYC, and the Playwrights Horizons Theatre School. Also, a rehearsed reading at RADA with Janet McTeer in the lead role, 2002.
- Good Faith, 2009 – Rehearsed reading at RADA – this play was written shortly before I moved to CA., and has lived quietly in a drawer since its well-received reading.
- Katya is currently working on play number 4, titled Square One
MAKER AND PERFORMER
Previously, Katya created and performed dance/theatre work in London, NYC, Berlin, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Atlanta.
Here are some responses to her work:
"…outstanding solo suite. Her movements were never predictable, but the dance images fitted together in poetic patterns that in retrospect looked inevitable."
Fernau Hall, The Daily Telegraph, London, March 20, 1984
"By far the most accomplished piece came from the American Katya Bloom, whose “Shades of Grey” was an eloquent mixture of lyricism and humour. … Here is an artist with unusual expressive potential, an actress/dancer living in the real world."
Jane King, Morning Star, London, November 11, 1983
"…stands apart, 'Shades of Grey' mixed an admirable economy and stillness into the rush and fright of wild birds, producing a heightened awareness from Katya Bloom."
Ann Nugent, The Stage and Television Today, London, December 15, 1983
“'Across My Heart' is a penetrating blend of psychodrama, movement and music which thematically explores the human struggle to integrate our private individual selves with our social world. A couple of aspects contribute to the successful treatment of such grand themes. First, Bloom never loses touch with the vital ingredient – humanity. Second, the work as a whole does not concern itself with providing a universal remedy or elixir for the all-too-human perplexities which are dramatized. Rather, it concerns itself with the conveyance of universally shared human experience."
