What is depth movement?
Depth Movement is based on the idea that we are always engaged in the movement of life.
Consciously or unconsciously we respond to what’s going on within us, and to what’s going on in the outside world. We’re influenced by our surroundings, and by our ancestral and cultural roots. Our decisions and actions, our perceptions, thoughts and feelings occur in response to the complex mix of what’s going on within and without.
Through the practice of Depth Movement, we seek to awaken deeper layers of our own being, as well as deeper capacities for being in relationship with others and with the Natural world. Through this non-stylized approach, we recognize our shared and our individual human qualities, and experience the interconnectedness of all life. In this sense, Depth Movement can be thought of as a spiritual practice. Through guided improvisational movement exercises, the practice of Depth Movement aims to release creativity, as it awakens and tunes the body itself. It heightens our ability to both listen to and speak the language of movement. We explore such fundamental concepts as space, time, gravity, balance, safety, relationship, character, complexity, play, agency and stillness. You will discover your own movement vocabulary, and your body will become more articulate. This practice is akin to the language of pre-verbal communication, suffused with the spontaneity and deep attention of children at play. Through our embodied expression, we become more response-able for designing our own movement through life. |
